George died August 16, 2006, on his 31st wedding anniversary, after a long bout with cancer. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957 and then graduated with a degree in Range Management from Utah State University. He jumped in Idaho City in 1962 and 1963. During the Vietnam War he was employed in military operations in Southeast Asia and returned to smokejumping in Fairbanks from 1971 to 1975. After retiring from the Alaska B.L.M. in 1985, George and his and his wife, Judith, purchased a beach-front home on Anderson Island, WA, where they operated a popular B. & B.
