James A. Barber ( Grangeville 1960 )

Jim died April 4, 2002 in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 62. He was a Missoula smokejumper for two years while attending Western Montana College at Dillon where he studied to be a teacher and coach.

Following graduation, he served in the Army in Europe for two years where he played football for an Army team.

Jim was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1965 and, during the 1960s and 1970s, served in Laos where he was decorated for valor.

He transferred to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1978 and spent the last 10 years of his government career as superintendent of the Tohono Oodham Nation in Sells, Ariz.

Jim retired at age 55 to a life of golf and gardening. He was diagnosed with cancer on Jan. 31, 2002.
