Frank, 63, died January 24, 2024. He was born on June 27, 1960, in Tucson, Arizona, into a firefighting family. His father worked on multiple national forests and was very active in fire suppression including Type 1 Fire teams and setting up the Boise Interagency Fire Center, now referred to as NIFC.
Frank grew up in multiple states but graduated from high school in 1978 in Warren, PA. Moving back west, he was hired by the USFS, on the Okanogan NF. He took classes from Spokane Community College and received a degree in Forestry Management in 1984.
From 1979 through 1987, Frank was a seasonal employee with fire suppression duties. In 1988, he rookied at NCSB and stayed there until 2003. The following year he transferred to Boise BLM smokejumpers and retired in 2015. He accumulated a total of 586 jumps and 271 fire jumps on both the round and ram air parachute. He proudly states that he stopped counting the number of fire assignments when he hit 500 fires. Additionally, he made fire jumps out of every USFS and BLM bases including Silver City, and 17 spike bases.
