Paul Samuel Carpino ( Missoula 1952 )

Paul, 96, died November 10, 2023, in Spokane Valley, Washington. He was born September 30, 1927, in Hartford, Connecticut. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945. After his discharge he moved to Missoula where he earned his degree in Social Work at the Univ. of Montana. Paul was a lifelong advocate the poor and a peace and nuclear disarmament activist. After graduation, he was involved in the Institute of Indian Affairs, where resisted proposals from the oil industry to dismantle reservations. He jumped at Missoula 1952-54 and moved to Deer Lodge, Montana, where he was a social worker for the State of Montana. In 1959 he was the social work supervisor for the Deer Lodge Prison.

Throughout his life he was involved in peace activism and helping low-income projects. In 1991, Paul was featured in the War Resisters League calendar for his peace work. In 2022, he was awarded the Univ. of Montana School of Social Work Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2023, the University's Distinguished Alumni Award. Paul was a dedicated cross-country and downhill skier and swimmer. He swam at least a mile a day until he was 92.
