Bob McKean (MSO-67) Selected Supt. of Portland Schools

by Bethany Barnes |

The Portland School Board has essentially picked an interim superintendent.

After interviewing five candidates in executive session, the board selected Bob McKean (PDF), former superintendent of Centennial schools, as the only finalist for the job.

A total of 11 people applied for the job.

McKean will attend a public meet and greet at the district's headquarters at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The board is expected to formalize the decision at its regular meeting later that night.

"We look forward to introducing Bob to the community prior to our vote this evening," PPS Board Chair Tom Koehler said in a press release. "Bob brings extensive experience as a manager and an educator. His record of advancing equality in education with a commitment to accountability and transparency is exactly the kind of leadership we need during this interim period as we identify the best candidate to fill the job permanently."

McKean worked as a teacher and school administrator in Montana for decades and served as superintendent of the Centennial school district just east of Portland for seven years, retiring in 2010. Reading and math scores rose significantly on his watch.
