REDDING, Calif. -
On Saturday, volunteers gathered at the Swasey Recreation Area to help build a public fitness park dedicated to Luke Sheehy, a smokejumper who died in the line of duty in 2013.
"When he began his firefighting career, he very soon found out how important fitness was to that career," said Doug Sheehy, Luke's father. "He committed a big part of his life to that."
Despite the rain, volunteers helped to shovel gravel to build the foundation. It's being funded by the Bureau of Land Management.
"There's going to be a pull-up station as well as some really great sit-up benches that were custom-made," said Garrett Dunn, the organizer. "There will also be a dip bar station."
Dunn added it will be a huge benefit for the firefighting community, who will be able to use it to meet fitness standards. Anyone utilizing the trail system for hiking or running can stop to use the fitness park as well.
