Red Skies of Montana Display Opens in Missoula

by Chris Sorensen |

Stan Cohen and the Museum of Mountain Flying in Missoula have assembled a display on the movie "Red Skies of Montana". The display includes movie posters and still photos. THe Museum of Mountain Flying opens for the season on Memorial Day Weekend.

It wasn't a bad gig, rubbing elbows with the stars in 1950 and '51.

Missoula got a full dose of Hollywood when Twentieth Century-Fox came to town - twice - to shoot "Red Skies of Montana."

Dick Doyle, fresh off winning the 1950 NCAA discus championship for the Montana Grizzlies, chopped wood at Camp Menard in the Ninemile in a background shot that was never used.
"There was a guy from Hollywood who kept having to bring me blocks of wood to split," Doyle, of Missoula, said with a chuckle. "He was saying, ‘Just fake it, just fake it.' "

Doyle allowed that he didn't know how to pull off artificial wood splitting.

“So I just kept chopping,” he said.
