TEHAMA COUNTY, Calif. - CAL FIRE provided insight into the fuel management efforts that help firefighters during the Park Fire.
CAL FIRE Tehama-Glenn Unit currently manages the "4 Notch Vegetation Management Project". Officials say that the project is broken down into multiple units to help make it easier for crews to manage and tackle fuel management work in each unit.
CAL FIRE says that last spring, they hosted crew unit exercises in Unit 5, where 59 crews worked hard to create a 300 foot line cut.
"The Highway 36 corridor was critical in holding, and just to the north of it is Battle Creek Canyon, and if fire was established in Battle Creek, it'd be very difficult to pick it up," said Luke Thomas, a Battalion Chief with CAL FIRE Tehama-Glenn Unit. "We would've had impacts to the communities of Shingletown, Manton very quickly."
CAL FIRE says that firefighters were able to use the line to gain quick access during the Park Fire, helping to protect homes, assist in evacuations, and control the fire perimeter.
