Posted: August 31, 2026
The National Smokejumper Association is mourning the loss of our fellow jumper, NSA Board member, and friend, Sarah Doehring, MSO ’91, who passed away unexpectedly on August 26 from complications of cancer.
Sarah was a smokejumper for 24 seasons (MSO 1991–1996, 1998–2011; GAC 1997, 2012–2014). She was the first female smokejumper base manager at Grangeville, Idaho, serving from 2012–2014, and later brought her experience and leadership to the NSA Board of Directors, where she served as Treasurer.
The NSA extends its deepest condolences to her husband, Butch, and to Sarah’s family and loved ones.
Missoula Smokejumpers are hosting a gathering in honor of Sarah Doehring on Wednesday, September 2, 6:30 p.m., at the Museum of Mountain Flying in Missoula, MT.
