Roger, 84, died August 17, 2019, at his home in Port Townsend, Washington. He was in the Air Force from 1948-52 and jumped at North Cascades 1954-55.

Roger received his degree in Forestry from the University of Washington in 1956. He worked for the Washington State Dept. of Natural Resources from 1956-82 and retired as a manager of Land Inventory. In the early 70s Roger participated in the development of applying satellite data to forest inventory. He introduced digital mapping to the Northwest and the Dept. of Natural Resources referred to Roger as the “Father of GIS mapping.”

After retirement, Roger and his wife spent time as Peace Corps volunteers in Senegal, West Africa.
