LEWISTON, Idaho – The Second District Magistrate Commission conducted interviews Friday for the Nez Perce County magistrate judge position, becoming vacant Aug. 30. Current Magistrate Kent Merica will retire that date.

There were 10 applicants. After deliberation, the commission selected Sunil Ramalingam (NIFC-93). Ramalingam is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Idaho College of Law in Moscow, where he also obtained his law degree.

Ramalingam attended the University of California, Davis, and Sacramento State University for his undergraduate work. His introduction to firefighting came by way of the Davis Fire Crew. He later jumped from the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise from 1993 through 1996.

Ramalingam will begin as magistrate Sept. 1.
