Smokejumpers Work to Save Oldest Parachute Loft

by chuck sheley |

Fifteen retired smokejumpers spent the week of June 22-26, working at the old Siskiyou Smokejumper Base in Cave Junction, Oregon. The project was the restoration of the oldest smokejumper parachute loft in the U.S.

This is the first phase in an effort to save what is left of one of the original smokejumper bases (1943). For a photo recap and more detail go to: www.highway199.org and click on "Parachute Loft Restoration Project."

More details will be printed in the Oct. issue of Smokejumper magazine.

Chuck Sheley is a Cave Junction jumper (1959-66) and editor of Smokejumper magazine.
