August 17, 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the 7.4 Hebgen Lake Earthquake which killed 28 people-19 of whem were buried and never recovered.
Missoula Smokejumpers made a Rescue Jump into the area and provided medical care to many of the injured.
Some of the smokejumpers who made that jump will be at the visitors center and there will be a proficency jump today at 0900.
Fifty years ago Monday, Montana’s most violent recorded earthquake struck near Yellowstone National Park.
Twenty-eight people died, including 19 in the undeveloped Rock Creek campground, which was buried under at least 80 million tons of rocks, boulders, mud and logs.
